Kurginyan: A consumerist society cannot address real challenges

19.03.2020. Moscow.

A consumerist society cannot face real challenges, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on the air of the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov TV program on the Russia One channel.

In the context of fighting the coronavirus, the political scientist said that “a consumerist society, as well as a state based on this model, cannot manage disasters.” According to the political scientist, this is because this kind of a society is incompatible with severe living conditions. “It is not adapted to survive in extreme forms of ill-being,” Sergey Kurginyan said.

He believes that consumerism is incompatible with a difficult type of existence; therefore, another way of existence should be adopted, otherwise the disaster will destroy everything.

In consumerism, the authorities cannot successfully oppose a real disaster no matter how efficient they are, Kurginyan believes. “Either we will manage to rearrange everything from the consumption-based model to another one, and this is something we are certainly experienced in, or the authorities, even acting efficiently within the consumerist algorithms and demands, will be swept away by the disaster,” the political scientist concluded.

Background

A new type of coronavirus, which can lead to human pneumonia with unusual symptoms, was detected in late 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China. Later, cases of infection were reported in Australia, South Korea, Nepal, Malaysia, Japan, the USA, France, and Canada. On January 31, the first two cases were confirmed in Russia.

China has been taking resolute measures to fight the infection. In particular, the PRC authorities quarantined the cities where the disease became widespread, and they mobilized military and civil health professionals to provide medical aid and examine the people. New hospitals are being built in record-breaking time. A number of countries have closed their borders with China, and many air companies have cancelled their regular flights to Beijing and other Chinese cities.
