A telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took place on January 3, according to a statement posted on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

In their telephone conversation, Russian and US officials on foreign policy issues discussed the elimination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force in Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Sergey Lavrov noted that the killing of “a UN Member State’s official” on the territory of another “sovereign state without its knowledge flagrantly violates the principles of international law and deserves condemnation.” The Russian Foreign Minister added that this US policy would lead to a “new round of escalation” of tensions that have arisen in the Middle East and calls on the State Department to solve international issues peacefully at the negotiating table.

On the night of 3 January, Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani was killed in an air strike at Baghdad airport. The Pentagon claimed responsibility for the General’s elimination.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei promised the United States to avenge Soleimani ‘s death.
