Germany becomes logistic center for deploying US troops near Russia’s borders

25.12.2019, Berlin.

The Defender Europe 2020 NATO exercise is the largest training of troops projection to Russia’s western border over the last 25 years, the Junge Welt German newspaper reported on December 24.

“Officially, this is a US military exercise, but in fact, the NATO members will practice an offensive in the event of a war against Russia,” the author wrote.

According to the newspaper, the aim of the exercise is to test NATO logistic capabilities to ensure mobility of troops from the USA to Eastern Europe.

First, 20 thousand US soldiers will be deployed to Western Europe. There, they will receive the necessary equipment and weapons from the storages in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, and then they will go, together with the armies of the European states, to Poland and the Baltic states.

The route suggests that Germany is becoming USA’s main logistic center in a potential war against Russia. Similar relocations of smaller US forces take place there approximately once every ten months starting from 2017.

In November 2019, the second part of NATO Exercise Iron Wolf took place in Lithuania. It involved about 4 thousand servicemen from 11 NATO countries and about 1 thousand units of equipment. The first part of the exercise took place in Lithuania in June 2019.
