The Ukrainian authorities’ lack of strategic thinking poses the question as to whether Ukraine exists as a state, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on December 10 on the Evening with Vladimir Solovyov TV program on the Russia One channel.
The dualism of Ukrainian policy excludes any possibility for making a strategic decision, Kurginyan said. “I am trying all the time to point to this Ukrainian political dualism, where, on the one hand, we want (I mean ‘we Ukrainians’) to join the EU with all its multiculturalism; but on the other hand, we want to preserve a unitary state. Democracy on one side and Bandera on the other. The coexistence of these two antithetical ideas excludes any chance for making a strategic decision, be it a decision in favor of war or peace,” the Essence of Time leader stressed.
Today, Ukrainian statehood itself comes under question, along with the formula of this state and the identity of the Ukrainian nation, Kurginyan believes. “Today, the critical question pertains to the existence of the Ukrainian state itself. To the formula of this state. To what the Ukrainian identity needs to look like, in order to be able to form at least some meager basis for this state. What is the role of the Soviet period? What does de-Sovietization mean in this sense? These questions are numerous. And none of these questions are being resolved strategically, and Zelensky does not resolve them either, because he depends on these nationalists. He is absolutely reluctant to upset his relations with them,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement noted.
At the same time, Zelensky has certain obligations to the people who entrusted the country to him. Zelensky already feels that his poll numbers are falling dramatically; therefore, “he is at a loss. All he can do is keep up the appearance of a moderate policy, saying one thing now and another later, using first the stick and then the carrot, to at least do something,” Kurginyan added.
In this situation, there is only one thing Russia should expect from what is happening, “Hopelessness, day-to-dayness; and maybe under the best circumstances, some minor improvements,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement said.
Putin does not want to put pressure on Zelensky because he is fine with the ping-pong policy in relations with Ukraine. Every year that this situation exists the Donbass’ positions only get stronger. The only condition is no bloodshed. “Every year, every month of keeping the status quo results in a greater separation of Donbass from the current Bandera Ukraine. And Ukraine is making no strategic moves to change this situation. It keeps doing the same thing. It keeps following the same semantics. It keeps speaking the same language: occupation, aggression, separatists, etc.,” Kurginyan said.
The Ukrainian elite simulates a statehood, the leader of the Essence of Time movement stressed. “All that I hear, all this linguistics, all these ways of existence for the Ukrainian side, are a simulated statehood. They are trying to create the appearance of talking like statesmen,” Kurginyan noted.
The Normandy Four summit ended in the early hours of December 10. The outcome of the summit was a three-item communiqué. The first provision requires urgent measures to be taken to stabilize Donbass. Acts of shelling must completely stop by the end of 2019, and a ceasefire must be established along the entire contact line between the conflicting sides. Also, forces must be withdrawn from three new areas by the end of March 2020.
The second provision requires measures to be taken to ensure the political rehabilitation of the Minsk agreements. This includes gradual implementation of all the provisions in the Minsk agreements.
The third provision requires that a plan of further actions to resolve the situation must be prepared. The leaders of the Normandy Four countries asked their advisors and ministers to monitor that the agreements reached are implemented.
