Shoigu calls to counter distortion of Great Patriotic War history

31.10.2019, Moscow.

The Defense Minister of Russia Sergey Shoigu urged his CIS colleagues to counter any attempts to rewrite the common war history of the people of the former USSR, misrepresenting the events of the Great Patriotic War, the press service of the Defense Ministry reported on October 30.

According to the Defense Minister, it is necessary to counter historical falsifications about the Great Patriotic war in cooperation with his CIS colleagues. “We must do everything we can to counter any attempts to rewrite this history, especially when the victors are represented as losers, and the losers are represented as victors.” Similarly, he noted, “it applies to the crimes committed during this great and heavy war for our country.”

According to Shoigu, the need to maintain historical accuracy is a reason why his CIS colleagues are invited to participate in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory.

“All our colleagues have received invitations to the celebration in Moscow for the military contingents of the CIS countries to participate in the Victory Parade on Red Square,” the Defense Minister said.

Sergey Shoigu expressed hope that Azerbaijani military personnel would participate in this ceremony as they have done before.

On October 30, a meeting of the Council of the Defense Ministers of the CIS countries took place in the capital of Azerbaijan.

Invitations to the Victory anniversary celebration were sent to UK Primer Minister Boris Johnson, US President Donald Trump, DPRK leader Kim Jong-un, the President of Belorussia Aleksandr Lukashenko. The President of France Emmanuel Macron, the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, and the President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel have already decided to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Victory in Moscow.
