US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed readiness to undertake military action against Turkey, CNBC news channel reports on October 21.
Pompeo did not clarify what actions by Ankara could prompt the US to extreme measures. The US Secretary of State only noted that the US prefers peace to war, it intends to preferentially use its available economic and diplomatic leverage to reconcile the situation in northern Syria.
Pompeo explained his attitude by mentioning that he did not want to “get out in front of the president’s decision about whether to take the awesome undertaking of using America’s military might”.
The Turkish Armed Forces began a war against the Syrian Kurds by starting “Operation Peace Spring” on October 9.
After the US army had withdrawn from the Kurdish-controlled Syrian regions, the Turkish military army invaded these regions.
On October 17, the sides agreed to a truce, but how long it will last is not yet clear.
