Zelensky interested in following Minsk agreements – Lavrov

25.09.2019, New York.

The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky expressed interest in resolving the Donbass situation in the framework of the Minsk agreements, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov said on September 25 at a meeting with journalists.

“We discussed our current situation,” the Russian diplomat said after a brief meeting with Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“Both sides expressed interest in resolving the Donbass situation according to the Minsk agreements,” he added, stressing that the most important thing was that Zelensky “said that.”

At the same time, the Russian foreign minister stressed that he has more trust in the words of the Ukrainian president rather than those of his team members, e.g. Andrey Ermak, who recently said that a “special status” of Donbass was out of discussion, be it in the Normandy Format or in the Contact Group.

The implementation mechanism of the Donetsk and Lugansk Region Special Status Act is part of the so-called Steinmeier Formula, and it is part of the Minsk agreements; it requires that Ukraine must permanently provide a special status to Donbass in its Constitution or another law.
