10.09.2019, Bogotá.

The Colombian authorities are in a state of “maximum readiness” to respond to any move by the Venezuelan army, the Colombian Presidential Counselor for Human Rights Francisco Barbosa said, El Tiempo reported on September 9.

In his statement, Francisco Barbosa noted that the executive power “does not enter hysteria” form the military maneuvers in the neighboring country, that it “observes carefully,” and that “the Colombian authorities are in maximum readiness to any changes.”

Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Trujillo said that the Colombian state can guarantee sovereignty and react to any possibilities. He also said that Colombia would always act in accordance with the international humanitarian law.

Previously, the President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro announced the beginning of major maneuvers near the Colombian border. He also said that the Colombian authorities were preparing a provocation in order to justify an armed conflict and to plan terrorist attacks from Colombian territory.

In the period of the political crisis in Venezuela, Colombia together with the USA has been providing support to the self-proclaimed president Juan Guaidó. In February 2019, the presidents of the two countries made a joint statement in his support. As part of Plan Colombia, the USA is providing financial and military support to the Colombian government, and it is keeping paramilitary groups in Colombia under the guise of countering the production of drugs.
