Vandals in Ukraine disfigure Jewish memorial with swastikas

29.08.2019, Nikolaev.

Unidentified vandals desecrated a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust in Nikolaev region of Ukraine, the Director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee Eduard Dolinsky reported on August 27 in a post on his Facebook page.

“Near the village of Vradievka (Nikolaev region), a memorial to 7 thousand massacred Jews has been desecrated and disfigured,” he wrote, adding supportive photos to his post.

The posted photos show that unidentified attackers covered the monument with scratches using a sharp object, leaving signs in the form of swastikas and anti-Semitic messages.

Acts of anti-Semitism and desecration of Jewish memorials in Ukraine are not something unusual. For example, on February 4, 2018, the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust in Ternopol was again covered with swastikas, and on April 23 the same year the memorial to the mourning Jewish mother was desecrated.

According to media reports, the opening ceremony of a memorial to the members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists ― Ukrainian Insurgent Army (organization banned in Russia) took place at a Jewish cemetery in the city of Sambor, Lvov region, on August 27. Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Yaakov Dov Bleich attended the opening ceremony.
