US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders voiced his support for Hong Kong protesters in a statement posted on August 19 to his Twitter account.
“It is the right of all people to protest for a better future,” said the politician and called on the Chinese authorities to “refrain from violence.” Sanders voiced his support for the protesters and emphasized that “the demonstrations in Hong Kong are an inspiration to us all.
The debate in the Chinese government on amendments to the extradition law caused mass demonstrations which have continued for more than two months. Protesters argue that this will allow the Chinese government to persecute political opponents on the autonomous territory of Hong Kong.
