Germans doubt that their Defense Minister should become the European Commission President

06.07.2019, Berlin.

Majority of Germans say their Defense Minister Ursula von der Lyayen would not make a good European Commission President, Politico Europe reports on July 5 on its website.

According to a public opinion poll conducted by ARD-Deutschland-Trend, 56% of respondents believe that the current defense minister is not a good choice for the EU’s top executive position. Only 33% would support the appointment.

Earlier, the Rossa Primavera News Agency reported that Ursula von der Lyayen is one of the candidates for the European Commission President, though the decision has not yet been made.

It should be mentioned that Ursula von der Lyayen has been involved in a number of scandals. In 2017, the investigative committee had accused her of distorting statistics on the quantity of defective military equipment. For example, the minister hid the fact that Germany does not have a single working submarine, and less than half of the total number of tanks and navy frigates are ready for combat. She was also accused of being involved in a budget scandal.

In 2010, Ursula von der Leyen initiated the fight against child pornography sites while she was a Federal Family Affairs Minister. The new set of laws in regards to blocking child pornography sites did not bring any benefit since the blocking was easily bypassed. On the other hand, the law became a subject of a popular protest because the opponents saw it as a step towards Internet censorship.
