Chinese Foreign Ministry urges UK to forget “colonial illusion”

04.06.2019, Beijing.

Geng Shuang, the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, urged the UK on July 3 to forget its “colonial illusion,” Global Times reports.

He made this statement after the UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt expressed his position regarding the Hong Kong mass demonstrations.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the UK to stop being overconfident and interfering with China’s internal affairs.

Geng Shuang noted that, because Hong Kong returned home in 1997, the rights and obligations of the British side under the Joint Declaration had been completely fulfilled. Starting from July 1, 1997, has China resumed its sovereignity over this territory, and the Chinese government has started administering it in accordance with country’s constitution.

According to Geng Shuang, China respects Hong Kong residents’ rights and freedoms, including political ones.

The Chinese diplomat also noted that Hong Kong’s residents had no democratic rights and freedoms during the colonial period.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, giving his judgment of the current protests in Hong Kong, said that the Chinese authorities had “repressed” the protesters.

In their turn, the Chinese authorities said that they only used force against the protesters after they broke into the Hong Kong Legislative Council building, thus violating the law.
