UK signs extradition request for Assange by US Department of Justice

15.06.2019, London.

The extradition request for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by the US Department of Justice has been signed, British Home Secretary Sajid Javid said in his interview to the BBC radio station on June 13.

Javid stated that on June 14 the London court considering the extradition request for Assange is to take the final decision on this issue. The extradition is underway within standard procedure, the minister said.

Journalist and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested in April 2019 by the British police after the Ecuadorian embassy deprived him of political asylum. The journalist spent the last 7 years in the Ecuadorian embassy hiding from prosecution by the US and Swedish authorities.

The US Department of Justice accused Assange of conspiring to gain unauthorized access to data stored on government computers.
