Airstrikes prevented in Donetsk on Republic Day

Donetsk People’s Republic People’s Militia (DPR PM) units shot down two drones belonging to Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), which were intended to strike the city of Donetsk and its suburbs on Republic Day, stated Daniil Bezsonov the head of the press service for DPR’s PM Department on May 12.

Militants from the 57th Motorized Brigade (of AFU – ref. by Rossa Primavera News Agency) attempted to strike from the village of Spartak from the air with improvised explosive devices attached to drones during the celebration of the DPR’s Republic Day. An enemy drone was shot down from the small fire arms, which resulted in the detonation of an explosive device in the air,” announced Bezsonov to reporters.

According to the head of the press service, right after the above-mentioned incident, DPR PM shot down another drone which was used to correct mortar fire against residential neighborhoods of the Kievsky district in the city of Donetsk

At the moment, the DPR PM Department has secured the wreckage of both drones.

According to paragraph 7 of the September 19, 2014 memorandum, participants in the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine represented by Ukraine, the Russian Federation, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as well as representatives of the DPR and the LPR, agreed not to use combat aircraft and drones. Thus, drone flights are prohibited along the contact line in the Donbass region.

As a reference, Republic Day is celebrated in the DPR annually on May 11. On this day in 2014, a referendum on self-determination of the region was held in the former Donetsk region of Ukraine. Three quarters of the population took part in the referendum. As a result of the vote, the state independence of the Donetsk region was supported by 89.7% of those who voted.
