EU opposes military solution to Venezuelan crisis

08.05.2019, San Jose.

The international community must provide a political solution to the crisis in Venezuela without military intervention, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini said on May 7 at a meeting of the international contact group, Agence France-Presse informs.

Representatives of the contact group heard a report on human rights violations in Venezuela followed by Mogherini’s declaration on the deteriorating demographic situation in the region.

According to Mogherini, every day five thousand people leave the country, and by the end of the year the number of Venezuelan displaced persons and refugees is expected to reach five million. This rapid deterioration makes a political solution mandatory and urgent.

Mogherini said that the international community should refrain from a military solution to the problem and provide financial aid to help overcome the Venezuelan crisis.

In addition, Mogherini said that that the recent coup d’etat attempt by opposition leader Juan Guaidó was “the result of desperation and the lack of a political horizon.”

On April 30, the Venezuelan opposition lead by Juan Guaidó launched a failed coup d’etat attempt. Only a small group of military personnel joined the coup conspirators, while the main forces remained loyal to the government. Russian experts consider the attempted coup d’etat to represent a test of loyal opposition forces by the US, rather than a decisive assault by the pro-Washington opposition.
