Russian Federation and Syria urge US to release refugees from Rukban camp

09.03.2019, Moscow.

The US-controlled Rukban Syrian refugee camp must be disbanded, the interagency coordination bodies of the Russian Federation and the Syrian Arab Republic said in their joint statement on March 8.

In their statement “On the distressful situation faced by Syrian women and children illegally detained by US-controlled militant gangs in the Rukban refugee camp” Russia and Syria urged the US to muster the courage to release all the refugees from the camp.

Rukban is located in an arid region near far northeastern Jordan. The refugee camp is located along the demilitarized zone between Jordan and Syria. The camp is within the Pentagon’s “deconfliction zone.”

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, violence and crime are widespread in Rukban, which hosts about 50 thousand people, and the militants recruit children for their groups. At a nearby military base, the US is training militants under the guise of fighting ISIL (organization banned in Russia) in order to deter Iran.
