A Russian oligarch’s yacht makes splash in Barcelona – it is huge

05.03.2019, Barcelona.

Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov’s yacht docked in the port of Barcelona and immediately caused a stir among local residents and tourists, social networks reported on March 2.

Several commentators sarcastically noted that they are proud to be sponsoring this floating giant with their personal ruble.

Alisher Usmanov is a Russian entrepreneur, a billionaire, who has repeatedly been named the richest man in Russia. His personal super-yacht Dilbar is 156 meters long and the world’s largest in terms of internal volume in its category.

In 2018, Russian Federal State Statistics Service (known as Rosstat) reported on the decline of income among Russian citizens. At the same time, the level of economic inequality in Russia, according to the World Inequality Lab, has reached the level of 1905.

Editorial comment

Amid such excessive spending on luxury items by so-called “smart” citizens, as Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov refers to them, recent legislative proposals that negatively impact the poorest in society, but certainly not the wealthy cause profound social alienation and a rift between the people and those in power. Every day people see such outrageous luxury while carrying less and less in their wallets. And it is not possible for them to understand why everything is so one-sided and unfair. If those in power fail to come to their senses, the social alienation and the rift between them and the people will lead to a social unrest similar to what happened in 1905.
