There is no divide – political analyst comments on the results of the Idlib summit in Sochi

16.02.2019, Sochi.

US plans to provoke a divide between the countries of the Astana trio failed, said Alexander Kuznetsov, deputy director of the Institute of Forecasting and Resolution of Political Conflicts, on February 15 at a round table discussion in the Rossiya Segodnya international news agency press center, Rossa Primavera News Agency reports.

The meeting between Vladimir Putin, Hassan Rouhani and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan did not reach any specific agreements, noted Kuznetsov at the round table discussion called “Syria: What did the leaders of Russia, Iran and Turkey agree on in Sochi?”

According to his opinion, however, “you can look at the positive aspects of the situation,” since one of the goals stated by US President Donald Trump about the decision to withdraw American troops from Syria was “to provoke a divide between the countries of the Astana trio.

Kuznetsov is certain that the US authorities intentionally invited Turkey to take their place in northeastern Syria, which was a trap for Erdoğan. “The cooperation between the US and the Syrian Kurds, really, has not stopped to this day. According to many sources, the US continues sending arms shipments to the Kurds,” said the expert.

The actual withdrawal schedule of US troops from Syria is constantly being delayed, he added. According to Kuznetsov, this was largely influenced by the terrorist act in the city of Manbidj, the responsibility for which was taken by the ISIL militants (an organization banned in Russia).

The US failed to provoke a divide between the countries of the Astana trio, confidently expressed the experts. “All its participants understand that, at the moment, they cannot yet promote their national interests in the Middle East and Syria without each other,” explained Kuznetsov.

On February 14, 2019, the fourth round of talks between the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey took place in Sochi, where they discussed the situation in the SAR. During the meeting, Putin, Rouhani and Erdoğan agreed that it is necessary to preserve the territorial integrity of Syria and discussed further steps to achieve peace in the Arab Republic.
