10th Ossetians’ Congress expresses firm support of integration between South Ossetia and Russia

26.08.2018, Tskhinvali.

A statement of “firm support from all Ossetian people towards the development of integration between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Russian Federation” was adopted on X Congress of the Supreme Council of the Ossetians International Social Movement on August 25, a Rossa Primavera News Agency correspondent reports.

The Congress takes place in South Ossetia’s capital Tskhinval. More than 460 delegates from North and South Ossetia and Ossetian diasporas around the world are taking part in the Congress.

The final statement of the Congress also reminds of “genocide and ethnic cleansings” against Ossetians that were committed by Georgia throughout the XX century. The statement also admits that only “creating its own state allowed the people of South Ossetia to organize defense against Georgia’s military aggression”.

The Congress delegates have also greeted the growing recognition of South Ossetia’s independence on the international level. Also, they have expressed deep gratitude towards Russia for repelling Georgia’s military aggression in 2008 and helping to restore the republic.

The final statement also specifically underlines the importance of the Treaty on Alliance and Integration between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia signed in 2015 that created “the strongest guarantees of peace for the people of South Ossetia.”

The Supreme Council of the Ossetians International Social Movement (SCO ISM) was created in May of 1993, and it was originally named Styr Nykhas. Today, SCO ISM is the most numerous Ossetians’ social organization. The movement aims for revival and strengthening of the national identity of Ossetians and compatriots in other countries, and also for developing “a feel of national pride, patriotism and internationalism” of Ossetians.
