Zakharova: Washington creates terrorist sanctuary in Syria

05.07.2018, Moscow.

US forces’ activities impede the final elimination of terrorism in Syria, Maria Zakharova, Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry, claimed on July 5, Regnum reports.

The aim of the final elimination of terrorism in Syria is complicated not least by the illegal and unjustified U.S. military presence in the Syrian region of Al-Tanf. In fact, there had been created a sanctuary for ISIL (organization banned in Russia) militants, which haven’t been yet finished off, states Zakharova.

The diplomat noted that the Syrian authorities do not have access to a quite big part of its territory even when they pursue only humanitarian objectives.

If Russia’s Western counterparts are really going to make peace in Syria for years, Russia expects that they will take appropriate decisions, including ones to alleviate the regime of one-sided restrictions with a view to allow the country to buy equipment, building materials, food, medicine and oil in world markets, highlights Zakharova.

The upcoming withdrawal of the U.S. forces from Syria was announced by the U.S. President Donald Trump on April 24, 2018. However, the head of the White House did not mention any precise date of it.
