Lebanon responds to calls for Hezbollah and Iran withdrawal from Syria

07.06.2018, Beirut.

The Iranian Armed Forces and the members of the Hezbollah movement will not leave Syria as long as the threat to its sovereignty persists, the Chairman of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri said in an interview to RIA Novosti on June 6.

According to the politician, the presence of the Iranian and Lebanese military on the Syrian territory is legal, because it is based on a decision made by the legitimate Syrian government and its President Bashar al-Assad. Berri noted that the armies that demand the Iranian army and Hezbollah to be withdrawn from the Arab Republic are present in Syria illegally.

Russia’s position on the withdrawal of non-Syrian forces from the territory of the Arab Republic is consistent and invariable: the internal political process in Syria must be stabilized through the withdrawal of all foreign contingents except the Russian one. This applies to the US, Turkish, and Iranian Armed Forces as well as the Lebanese Hezbollah.
