Professor: We must revive the Project of Modernity

26.03.2018, Berdsk.

It is necessary to return to the Project of Modernity, professor Ilya Kuznetsov, Doctor of Philology, stated during a public meeting at Literature Parlor held in the Biriukov’s Theater museum in Berdsk on March 25, a Rossa Primavera News Agency correspondent reports.

In the course of his lecture titled “A Better World And a Better Human of Maxim Gorky”, Kuznetsov said that presently Russians belong to a type of culture that has a discontinuity with the past traditions of Russia. The issue is not in the October revolution, as it is often presented in the post-Soviet era, but rather in the 1960’s, when the tradition rapture really occurred.

The contemporary generation of Russians is tasked to restore the Modernity project’s cultural tradition, comprehension, and development, according to Kuznetsov.

The Project of Modernity in Russia was conceived in the last decade of the 19th century and it was rooted in the whole Russian cultural legacy. Modernity declared an attitude to reality as to a material to transform and to a human as to a given constant, which also requires permanent transformation. The goal was to create a society of new humans who are ready to transform the world and to excel themselves at any given time, thus accomplishing a feat. Maxim Gorky was the most prominent creator of such human’s image in the Russian literature.

The Soviet culture was a follower of this idea, of this kind of world perception. The Stalin-era human is a human that is constantly in a state of accomplishing a feat. The people raised in such culture were able to win in the most terrible World war.

In the 1960’s, USSR started to employ a different concept of development that was aimed at increasing consumption. Together with this, the Modernity project’s culture was rejected. In the end, it led to society’s disorientation. The human stopped to understand what is good and what is bad. And without such understanding, no historical progress is possible.

The West, also executing the Modernity project, started to wrap it up as early as in the middle of the last century. By the 90’s it was said about the “The End of History and the Last Man”. The contemporary West “turns everything inside out. The immoralism becomes a foundation of the Post-modern world. It is said about the end of the Human project, the end of the Humanism project, etc… Russia obviously became a power that spontaneously protects the Modernity project together with its norms and morality”, Sergey Kurginyan, a political scientist, claims.
