First session of People’s Tribunal for Ukraine scheduled

The first session of the People’s Tribunal on war crimes by Ukrainian authorities in Donbass will take place on March 26-27, Court Chairperson Elena Shishkina said on March 20 in Donetsk, Lenta.ru reports.

Attorneys Lyubov Batyasheva and Tatyana Kravchenko were also elected as judges in addition to Shishkina. Sergey Kozhemyakin will advocate the position in prosecution, and Elena Gridina will advocate the position in defense. All of these attorneys are Ukrainian nationals.

Top Ukrainian officials responsible for the military operations on the Donbass territory are to be summoned to the session. They include Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Aleksandr Turchinov, Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, and Ukrainian Army’s Chief of General Staff Viktor Muzhenko. The figures are to be summoned by email. Online communication can be arranged if anyone refuses to arrive.

On February 22, the leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Aleksandr Zakharchenko, announced the establishment of a military tribunal on the Kiev regime’s war crimes on Donbass territory. This was a reaction to Poroshenko’s signing the Donbass reintegration act. On March 15, the establishment of the People’s Tribunal on the Kiev regime’s crimes was announced by members of the initiative group at a press conference in Lugansk.

The Donbass reintegration act was signed on February 20. According to the act, the DPR and the LRP are occupied territories, and Russia is an aggressor.
