German experts: Ukrainians should demand reforms from politically possessed authorities

03.02.2018, Berlin.

The Ukrainian people are getting impatient, the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (German: SWP) believes, a correspondent of the Rossa Primavera Information Agency reported on February 1.

According to the SWP, Ukrainian politicians are mostly driven by playing politics, rather than a real intention to reform their country: “Generally, Ukraine today is in a period of political maneuvering, when the formation of tactical alliances and the exchange of favors are more important than any political meaning or attempts to reform the country”.

Another cause of the crisis is the fragmented opposition, according to the German experts. On the one side there is Saakashvili, and on the other side, according to SWP, there are civic organizations, local activists, and reform-oriented MPs. These forces speak different languages.

A third cause, as they think, is the political uncertainty and incompetence of the acting government. The Center’s main conclusion is that failing to resolve the problems of the general public can seriously destabilize the country.

According to the Center, Europe should exert pressure on the Ukrainian authorities to demand actual reforms, the empowerment of anti-corruption organizations (e.g. NABU), reform of the prosecutor’s office, and the vital rebuilding of social sectors.

The Institute for International and Security Affairs was established in 1962, and it has been state-funded since 1965. According to the internationally recognized institute, TTCSP, which analyses global research centers, SWP ranks number 20 among over six thousand organizations.

Editorial comment

The vision of the global landscape today is almost exclusively formed by global think tanks. SWP is a major think tank in Germany. Its analytics strongly influence the scope of what regional media cover.

Therefore, it is important to understand what kind of vision they are forming around the Ukrainian conflict. A distinctive feature of this report is that it ignores any nationalist sentiments in the society. This ideological shift is intentionally mentioned only as a factor of instability along with Russia. The West benefits from communicating this kind of vision, and it spares no effort to do so.
