CAS has returned 2014 Winter Olympics medals to the Russian team

01.02.2018, Switzerland.

Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has returned 9 out of 13 medals back to Russian athletes, CAS official website informs on February 1.

The court ruled in favor of the appeals of 28 Russian athletes and recognized their lifetime ban from performing in the Olympic games as invalid. Results of the athletes, which were disqualified, will be recovered.

11 other appeals have been partially satisfied and the results will not be recovered, but the lifetime disqualification from the Olympics is replaced by the ban to take part in the games in Pyeongсhang in 2018.

As a result, the Russian team has lost only two Gold medals in one discipline, bobsleigh. What is to be done with the two Silver medals is still in discussion.

Based on the doping scandal the International Olympic Committee has disqualified the Russian team from taking part at the Pyeongсhang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, including those athletes who have never been suspected of doping use. The Russian athletes who have been permanently banned form performing at the Olympics have filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
