On January 22, during their meeting in Moscow, the Military Attaché of the Chinese Embassy in Russia Kui Yanwei and the Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Viktor Bondarev expressed the need to jointly counter global threats and challenges from NATO, TASS reports.
Major-General Kui Yanwei gave this assessment of the global force alignment: “In Europe, the US, together with Western countries, deter Russia, and in Asia, they deter China“. According to the Chinese Military Attaché, both countries need to jointly counteract the challenges posed by the US and its allies, and act together to cope with other global threats.
In turn, Viktor Bondarev highly appreciated the priority of strategic partnership with China for Russia, and noted that the cooperation between Russia and China in the field of the military-technical partnership is increasing.
A schedule of regular communication between two countries within the parliamentary working groups on security was set during the meeting.
Russia is presently the largest supplier of military goods and services to China. Israel, which was the second largest supplier, has cut delivery under US pressure. According to Russian officials, the total military contract value was approximately $100 billion in 2016, of which almost $ 3 billion was fulfilled during the year.
The regular joint military exercises of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China took place in 2017. The exercises were conducted in the Sea of Japan and, for the first time, the Okhotsk Sea.
Also, US experts note the strengthening of ties between the two countries. In Spring 2017, a report “China-Russia Military-to-Military Relations: Moving Toward A Higher Level of Cooperation” was prepared for the Congress. In addition, the US National Defense Strategy, published on January 19, 2018, pays great attention to deterring Russia and China.This caused a negative reaction of the Foreign Ministries of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China.
