04.01.2017, Iran.

The commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Mohammad Ali Jaafari stated that the sedition of 2017 failed, RIA Novosti reports.

Jaafari said, “I announce the end of the sedition of 2017 … The number of protesters was small and did not exceed 15,000 people across entire Iran”.

Besides, Jaafari accused Washington, Tel Aviv, and Riyadh of giving the command to the militants of ISIL (an organization banned in Russia) to enter the Iranian territory: “The United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia gave orders to the Islamic State (organization banned in Russia – Editor’s note) to enter Iran’s territory for subversive activities”. In the end of December 2017, protests caused by price increases began in several Iranian cities. The Iranian President said that among other things the protests were instigated by other countries.

Editorial comment

It must be noted that price increases became only a pretext for the initial protests. In the first days, the unrest the protests shouted slogans calling for the death of the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In other words, the protests are directed not only against the secular authorities but against the spiritual authorities of Iran as well.
