Extremists make anti-Jewish provocation in Transcarpathia

27.11.2017, Ukraine.

Unidentified persons left an extremist inscription on the wall of the Hesed Shpira Jewish charitable fund in Uzhgorod, Zakarpatskaya region (Transcarpathia), in the early hours of November 27, the Director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee Eduard Dolinsky wrote on his Facebook page.

This is not the first incidence of aggressive behavior against Jews in Ukraine. Dolinsky previously reported that a Holocaust victims memorial was desecrated in Ternopol. Ukrainian authorities never reported detaining the vandals.

Editorial comment

A difficult situation is unfolding in Transcarpathia today. On the one hand, various ethnicities live in the region, including Hungarians, Romanians, Jews etc. These ethnicities have always been loyal to Ukraine. However, after the Euro-Maidan (the Ukrainian color revolution ― translator’s note) happened, the Ukrainian nationalists, or neo-Nazis, can act openly and without fear. This has resulted in regular provocations in Transcarpathia and attacks against national minorities committed by radicals; also, the Ukrainian government itself fuels the flame, by passing a discriminatory Education Act or by making a hero of Stepan Bandera. As a result, other countries simply have to take a hard-line stance; for example, Hungary has said that Transcarpathian Hungarians have the right to autonomy.
