Ukrainism: Who constructed it and why? An overview of the scientific-practical conference

This is the translation of the series of the presentations’ summaries of the scientific-practical conference “Ukrainism: Who constructed it and why”. The conference was held in Moscow on October 11 and 12. It was organized by Essence of Time social movement and Experimental Creative Centre International Public Foundation.

At the conference “Ukrainism: Who constructed it and why”, a multi-authored monograph of the same title was presented; Sergey Kurginyan spoke about its content. “We are studying Ukrainism, not Ukraine. Our subject is Ukrainism as a construct. The creation of this construct, its characteristics, its consecutive transformation, its implementation, and finally its outlook―this is the focus of our study, which is thus fundamentally different from a normal historical or sociological study of a normal Ukraine,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement said.

Ukrainism is a construct which has been impressed into people’s minds for centuries, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, politician and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan said. The purpose of Ukrainism is to completely break any connections with Russia, the political scientist said, directing attention to the intensity of the phenomenon.

The Western elite’s consensus is a belief that Russia, i.e. the USSR, lost the Cold War and signed a capitulation, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, politician and political scientist Sergey Kurginyan said. In view of the outlined assertion, the West perceives Crimea’s reintegration into Russia and the war in Donbass as an attempt to revise the outcome of the Cold War.

The researcher Svetlana Yurchenko discussed facts of cooperation between the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (organization banned in Russia) and the Nazis. The speaker stressed, that attempts, while implementing the “Ukrainism” project, to hide the OUN’s connections to Nazis, and the facts of their joint criminal activities, collided with the real historical memory of those, whose ancestors the Ukrainian nationalists mercilessly exterminated.

Ukraine is an example of the rehabilitation of fascism, researcher Vitaly Gavrilin said. “Tacit rehabilitation of fascism, including Nazi marches, apologetics of Bandera, and much more, is supplemented by increasing demonization of communism as a major physiological tool aimed at the rehabilitation of fascism by the contrast-based approach (‘communism is so terrible that even fascism, which fought this evil, by the way,…’ and so on),” the researcher said. He believes that this situation strongly supports the idea that many would welcome the end of the current world order which is based on the condemnation of fascism.

Ukraine promotes the Bandera policy under the European umbrella, and Germany is one of the countries, which is trying to use the process in its interests, like it did a hundred years ago, researcher Rustam Valiev said. Today, Germany considers Ukraine an economic appendage and an instrument with which to deter Russia; foreign agents are rapidly taking over Ukrainian natural resources, Valiev said.

Dmitry Stepanov, one of the authors of the monograph, started his speech with describing the three main dimensions of the Ukrainian monarchism; then he focused on the Habsburgs, who lost their throne after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and the setting their eyes on Ukraine.

An activist of the Essence of Time movement Ksenia Ostronosenko in her report “Otto von Habsburg, Bandera Nazis, and others” discusses the dual-purpose activity of the heirs of the Habsburg dynasty aimed at European integration and at Soviet disintegration. Otto von Habsburg, the heir to the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary, Karl I, consistently combined participating in pan-European integration with activity aimed at the break-up of the Soviet Union and Russia, the researcher said.

Researcher Evgeny Fursov demonstrated the ideological connections between the prominent American political scientist and statesman Zbigniew Brzezinski’s (1928-2017) family and the Polish anti-Russian doctrine of “prometheism”. He also made a point that History responded to the modern Ukrainian regime by reviving the Eastern Ukrainian identity when Donetsk People’s Republic announced itself as successor to the DKSR in 2015.
