Ukrainian army will receive 200 units of military hardware, said the President of Ukraine Pyotr Poroshenko on October 14, during his speech at the Day of the Defender of Ukraine in Kiev, TASS reports.
“I’m heading to the troops’ positions right from here to hand over another batch of weapons and hardware – 200 units, including 62 tanks”, Poroshenko said. In his speech, Poroshenko congratulated Ukrainians with the Day of the Defender of Ukraine. Also, he reminded that Ukraine “will definitely become a NATO member”.
Earlier Ukraine had celebrated the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland on February 23. This holiday had replaced the Day of the Red Army. After “maidan” [coup d’etat in Ukraine] in 2014, the new authorities shifted the celebration day. In February 2015 Poroshenko has proposed to establish a new holiday, the Day of the Defender of Ukraine, celebrated on October 14. This date is the creation day of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (organization banned in Russia).
