Syria prepares to eliminate Islamists’ stronghold

08.10.2017, Syria.

ISIL (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) militants are encircled in Al-Mayadin by the Syrian army, Reuters reported on October 8.

Syrian military source said that Syrian army and allied Shi‘ite militias managed to encircle one of the last ISIL (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) strongholds in the eastern Syria. Allied Syrian, Shi‘ite militias, and Russian aerospace forces pushed Daesh (ISIL, organization banned in Russia) to Al-Mayadin in spite of the constant attacks undertaken by the Islamists at the road that is used to supply allies in Deir ez-Zor from the western Syria.

While the western bank of Euphrates was liberated by the Syrian army, the eastern bank is mostly controlled by Kurdish Peshmerga backed up by the US forces. Thus, Islamists have only one way to flee, which is towards the Iraqi border. Al-Mayadin seems to be just a short ‘pit stop’ on their way out of Syria.
