Media: U.S. spent $2 billion to arm of Syrian opposition

Syrian opposition received weapons worth $2 billion from the U.S., according to an investigation by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), TASS reports on September 13.

According to the report, the U.S. spent $700 million to arm the opposition this year alone. The U.S. started to supply in 2015. Over $900 million has been contracted through 2022.

Journalists report that the Defense Department of U.S. resorts to weapons suppliers of Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Georgia so as to manage the necessary volume of equipment supply.

The U.S. organized its anti-terrorist coalition in 2014. Several U.S. military bases are in Haseke province and Kobani. They serve as transit points for traffic of military equipment and ammunition. Also, groups of the armed opposition under control of the U.S. are being trained on the military bases.
