UN Commission says US-led coalition violated international law

UN experts came to the conclusion that in March 2017, the liberation of the Syrian city of Raqqa by the US-led international coalition fighting ISIL (organization banned in Russia), was conducted violating international law, Russia Today News Agency reported on September 6.

The Independent International Commission, which was set up by the United Nations to investigate human rights violations in Syria, presented the report on the UN website.

In the report, the authors emphasize their concern that the US coalition is neglecting lives of civilians while launching its airstrikes.

“US forces failed to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians and civilian objects when attacking alleged terrorists and destroying part of a mosque complex in al-Jinah, Aleppo in March, in violation of international humanitarian law“, the reports states.

The coalition, which is led by the United States, conducts military operations in Syria without Syrian government’s consent. Numerous civilian casualties in Syria have been recorded as a result of military operations involving aviation and artillery.
