Militants from CIS discovered in Deir ez-Zor

06.09.2017, Syria.

In the course of lifting a siege of the large Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor , the presence of militants from CIS countries was established on the ISIL (organization banned in Russia) positions, RIA news agency reports on September 6.

The city of Deir ez-Zor was besieged by Islamists for about three years. Military operation on the city’s liberation is a part of an ongoing offensive of the Syrian Army. Deir ez-Zor blockade lifting became possible after the Russian Aerospace Forces’ and the Russian Navy’s recent series of targeted airstrikes against the militants’ positions.

Military specialists have examined captured strongholds and established that militants were preparing for a long-term defense. This is evident from a large number of existing underground living areas and connecting trenches, large ammunition stocks, medical supplies and food stocks.

At present, the Syrian Army continues its operation to liberate Deir ez-Zor.

The defense of Deir ez-Zor started in September 2014 after militants had laid a siege on the airport. Earlier, in April 2014 Islamists managed to cut off Damascus – Palmira – Deir ez-Zor road traffic. It is a strong airport defense which during these three years made providing aid to the defensive forces of the city and local citizens via air possible. On September 17, 2016, the Western coalition carried out airstrikes on the defending Syrian Army’s positions, followed by a large-scale militants’ assault. Such actions by the Western coalition caused a leap in political tensions between Moscow and Washington as well as breaking ceasefire agreements reached earlier.
