China reaffirmed its commitment to the Paris climate accord

01.06.2017, Germany.

Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Li Keqiang said at a joint press conference with Angela Merkel on June 1 that China will fulfill its obligations under the Paris climate accord, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Li Keqiang said that China has been “actively promoting” the climate deal.

Reports in the media that the US President, Donald Trump is ready to withdraw from the climate treaty rekindled, in recent days, the conversation about the Paris climate accord of 2015.  Earlier Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary for the President of Russia, commented on the situation.  He said that implementation of the treaty without the US will be difficult, but there are no alternatives.

China’s coal energy sector has a great share.  China is the largest producer of coal in the world.  Coal energy sector significantly contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.  China is moving to reduce the share of coal in its total energy consumption and is looking for alternative sources of energy.

Noteworthy, Western countries often use “environmental” contracts to limit the growth of economies of developing countries, while not always adhering to them on their own.  For example, the US has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol, which also limits greenhouse gas emissions.
