The Waffen SS has become the backbone of Latvian patriotism

26.04.2017, Latvia.

The Latvian Army released a recruitment video on April 26th with a Waffen SS soldier in order to attract new servicemen, the website of “Zvezda” Russian TV Channel reported.

A soldier wearing the Waffen SS uniform appears in an animated video clip as one of a number of images of Latvian warriors throughout history.  The service patches of the Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS stand out.  The protagonist of the animated video has an MG-34 machine gun, the machine gun of the German Wehrmacht during the WWII, hanging over his shoulder.

This is not the first attempt to glorify Nazism in the Baltics.  Modern-day Nazi sympathizers marched the streets of Baltic cities repeatedly: in Riga on March 16th; in Tallinn, a torchlit parade took place on February 25th.  Similar actions received support from influential Baltic politicians (for example, the speaker of the Latvian Sejm or Parliament – Ināra Mūrniece).  Now the army is following this trend.
