Fidel Castro dies at 90

Today died the hero of Cuba, one of the greatest revolutionaries of the 20th century who influenced the fate of the whole world, Fidel Castro.


Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on August 13, 1926 in Birán village (Cuba). After Fulgencio Batista’s coup on March 10, 1952, Fidel joined the ranks of those who fought against the dictatorship. When he was tried by the military tribunal, he delivered his famous speech “History Will Absolve Me”. After amnesty of 1955 he fled to Mexico, where, together with other enemies of Batista’s regime he began to prepare the plan of an armed uprising. On November 25, 1956, Cuban revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro went to Cuba on Granma yacht. Even though Castro’s unit was small, revolutionaries were supported by local residents, and a part of the army sided with Castro. They were victorious. U.S. government made several attempts to overthrow the new Cuban government. On May 1, 1962, Castro declared that Cuban revolution is socialist. Cuba actively aided countries and people struggling against imperialism.

Numerous specialists from Latin America received education on the Island of Freedom. Cuban doctors became well-known throughout the whole world due to their selfless assistance. Fidel Castro became an icon for the Bolivarian Movement throughout Latin America.
