Russian airstrikes eliminated radical Islamists trying to break through from Palmyra

Russian military aircraft eliminated a group of ISIL (Organization banned in Russia) militants who tried to break through from Palmyra, the Head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Sergei Rudskoy said, Interfax reports.

All the scattered ISIL [Organization banned in Russia – Editor] gangs, who broke out, were eliminated by Russian aviation, preventing them from fleeing in the direction of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor,” he said during the briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

Despite certain local ceasefire violations, clashes were stopped in most of territories of Homs, Hama and Aleppo provinces. This created conditions for the return of civilians to their homes“, Rudskoy said.

He stressed that the reconciliation agreement with armed opposition forces has allowed government troops to amplify the fight against terrorist groups ISIL (Organization banned in Russia) and “Jabhat al-Nusra” (Organization banned in Russia).

From the beginning of March divisions and units of the Syrian Army, as well as militia and patriotic opposition units were redeployed, in order to strike ISIL [Organization banned in Russia – Editor] terrorist groups near Tadmor (Palmyra, Homs province),” – the general said.
